Lucia

December 13^th is a big day in Sweden! Over the whole country families gather at schools, in churches, and other places to see the yearly “Lucia train”

December 13^th was believed to be the longest night of the year. And in Sweden, all the way up north it was really long! Lucia came with the light! She brought the light back.

This Swedish festival of lights helps to brighten up the long winter nights in December. It celebrates the life of a real saint, Lucia, who was known for her kindness and love.

She brings her maids and Santa helpers as well as one or two gingerbread men. They all sing traditional songs and all the maids are carrying candles. Lucia herself is wearing a crown with candles.

The tradition calls for special saffron buns (Lussekatter) and ginger bread cookies made in heart shapes (they make you nicer is the belief). Lucia is the start of the holiday season for the Swedes. It is a very important and nice tradition.

SWEDEN

Sweden is a country located in the northern parts of Scandinavia. Almost all the way up by the north pole! Is has about 9 million people living there and they all speak Swedish. The capital is Stockholm.

This is my way of sharing some of our traditions with you!
